Kylie Jenner wows in a corset dress and futuristic shades as the billionaire beauty mogul is joined by her glam sisters at Kylie Cosmetics launch party The Dreamwave Transformers comics have developed a mixed reputation over the years, but this miniseries is at the very least a respectable effort.Tragedy as the Duchess of Cornwall's cousin - who was embroiled in one of Britain's longest divorce battles - 'is found dead' And, in terms of fan service, using Shockwave as a vehicle to reintroduce Cybertron while also addressing complaints over Grimlock's previous portrayal are both smart ideas. War and Peace also deserves some credit for addressing one of the oddest aspects of Transformers lore - what the heck was supposed to be happening on Cybertron during those millions of years the main characters were stuck on Earth? Why should the audience assume that the Autobots and Decepticons are still fighting the same war after such an absurdly excessive amount of time? Even if having Shockwave turn out to be more snake than savior is somewhat predictable, the premise remains intriguing. Is there more to the miniseries than pretty art and nostalgia? Truthfully, the heroes are given some interesting conundrums to work out and some of the moves that might've come across as cheap in the earlier Dreamwave comics (like pitting the Autobots against Ultra Magnus) feel more credible here. Shockwave momentarily manages to download sacrosanct data from the mega-computer into his network until he's interrupted by a returning Ultra Magnus, who receives his own face-turn at the story's conclusion. Requiring the Matrix within Optimus' chest compartment to activate Vector Sigma, Shockwave's blunt plan is to reach into his chest and rip it out. Shockwave later broadcasts footage of the Autobots' battles on Earth throughout Cybertron, hoping to sway public opinion against Optimus Prime.įurther developments confirm that Shockwave's efforts to unite Cybertron are anything but altruistic. His ultimate goal for retrieving the earthbound Transformers is to have Optimus Prime and Megatron tried as war criminals on Cybertron. He's taken what he's learned and worked to restore Cybertron, solving the planet's energy crisis and ending the interminable war between Autobots and Decepticons. War and Peace presents a Shockwave who's spent millennia studying the secrets of his race, eternally curious about why the Transformers exist and the mysteries that remain hidden within Cybertron. In a move that shocked fans only familiar with the cartoon's continuity, where Megatron ruled with an iron fist, Shockwave bested the damaged Megatron and took control of the Decepticons. After deeming Megatron a failure, the two face off in one of his earliest appearances, a memorable issue from writer Bob Budiansky and artist Alan Kupperberg. In the Marvel series, Shockwave is a coldly calculating schemer who seeks control of the Decepticons. Shockwave's cold, unnerving vocal performance from actor Corey Burton and unusual character design (his mold came from the Japanese toy company To圜o, instead of Takara's Car-Robots toyline or Diaclone's Microman, the source of most Transformers) left an impression on viewers, even if Shockwave rarely participates in the action. In the animated series, Shockwave is a loyal subject of Megatron, left behind on Cybertron and offering whatever assistance he can while millions of light years away. Any doubts about Grimlock's loyalty are now squashed, and that big, shocking twist from Prime Directive shall now be forevermore forgotten.ĭreamwave made another effort at combining the most popular elements of the 1980s cartoon and comics when reintroducing Shockwave. Optimus Prime is too damaged to help, but Grimlock emerges just in the nick of time to pull Ultra Magnus to safety and return to Optimus the Matrix of Leadership that Shockwave had torn from his chest earlier. Grimlock receives his ultimate redemption in the miniseries' climactic scene, when Ultra Magnus is left hanging over a pit that leads to a bottomless void within Vector Sigma, the super-computer that dwells within the heart of Cybertron. This is clearly a retcon, as nothing in Prime Directive indicates this at all, but it works as a justification for a divisive creative decision and at least has some logic behind it. The implication is that Grimlock only sided with Megatron because the villain was using his captured teammates as leverage. In the second issue, Grimlock breaks into Megatron's secret underground cavern in the Arctic, where we discover the Dinobots are kept captive in stasis pods.
